Children's and Household Tales is a collection of German fairy tales first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The collection is commonly known in the Anglosphere as Grimm's Fairy Tales (German: Grimms Märchen).BackgroundOnce upon a time in the German town of Hanau in the Hesse-Kassel landgrave, there lived two brothers. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their father died at a young age, when the brothers were ten and eleven. This put the family into relative poverty, but the brother's elder sister who was a lady-in-waiting to the landgravine supported the brother's education. She sent them to the well-respected public school at Kassel.The two brothers then attended Marburg University together where they studied law. It was while studying law that the bothers discovered an interest in philology and Germanic folk-tales.In 1812 - when the brothers were in their mid-twenties - they published their first collection of folk-tales. Children's and Household Tales - more commonly known in Anglophone countries as Grimm's Fairy Tales - it features many of the best fairy tales ever imagined, including Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and the Golden Goose.As previously mentioned, the collection initially comprised of just 86 stories in its 1st edition, 1st volume. But by the time of its 7th edition had 211 stories in both volumes, 200 folk-tales and 11 legends. The final edition (of the "Large Edition" as it was known) was published in 1857. Just two years before the death of Wilhelm.The 2nd volume was first published in 1814 and added another 70 tales initially. Making the total number of tales 156. Over the rest of the editions, stories were added (and changed) gradually with each publication.Their younger brother Emil provided illustrations for the book. Many of these illustrations added Christian symbolism to the stories and helped children imagine the stories better.
